Welcome to Adventures In Maryland! I hope you will join us often here as we explore the many museums, attractions, waterways, trails, restaurants and historic sites that make Maryland a great place to live or visit.
This site was an idea that came to my mind in late 2013. Now, who am I? I am Greg Ruby, a native Marylander from Carroll County, and since the 1980’s I have been involved in the tourism and hospitality industries and bringing various conventions and trade shows to Baltimore and various other Maryland cities. Ten years ago, I became a resident of Baltimore and now live in the Canton area
When I was a small child, my parents used to sell real estate and the company they worked had an ad campaign that touted Maryland as “America in Miniature.” How true! I can hop in my car and in 3 hours I can be in Garrett County’s Appalachian Mountains or on the beach of the Atlantic Ocean in sunny Ocean City.
There is so much history in this state. I’ve visited our state’s first settlement, St. Mary’s City but I’ve never taken the time to visit the Civil War battlefield in Antietam. I would like to go hiking along the C&O Canal and bird watching in the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. I want to ride the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and sail out to the Thomas Point Lighthouse.
I enjoy a good meal and look forward to discovering local gems of restaurants and farmer markets in my travels throughout the state. I’ve lived in Maryland my entire life and yet there is still so much more to explore.
What am I hoping to do here at Adventures In Maryland? I hope to encourage you and your family to consider making your own adventure in Maryland – take one of the scenic byways as your travel, visit a museum or make a day trip to explore what Maryland has to offer. We will cover the entire state in this blog, except for Baltimore. Baltimore will be covered in our sister blog, Adventures In Baltimore.
In time, we may organize a few bus tours to historic sites and attractions around Maryland. This will take some time to arrange. We will offer commentary here about local restaurants. You will not see us talking about Red Lobster or Olive Garden style restaurants here. While they offer good food, they can be found throughout the United States. We will focus on locally owned restaurants that are unique to Maryland.
I had hoped that this blog would be further along now. Unfortunately, I broke my ankle in the last week of 2013 and two surgeries later, I am still over a month away from being able to place pressure on my foot. I had planned to have visited ten or more attractions by now. So, this is still very much a work in progress.
I consider this blog to be ours – both mine and you the reader. What are some topics that you would like to see covered here? To those folks various attractions, museums and restaurants, I would love to hear from you and share your news. I am considering having advertising on here, so if you want to advertise your wares, drop me a line. You can comment here on the site or send me an email message at Info(at)AdventuresInMaryland(dot)com. I look forward to your comments and suggestions.

I am a huge believer in supporting local businesses and attractions. In addition to this blog, I have also just launched Adventures In Baltimore, offering up advice on local attractions, museums and restaurants for just the city of Baltimore. In addition, I have another sister site called Drink-Maryland.com that is highlighting the various breweries, distilleries, wineries and vineyards in Maryland. There is so much to see and do in Maryland – it truly is America In Miniature. I hope you will check out both sites!
